A suspended CIB license means one thing: you cannot legally work. Not on new jobs. Not on jobs you already started. Not on anything. Until your license is reinstated, you are not a licensed contractor in Oklahoma.
The fastest path out of suspension is getting your insurance in order and submitting proof to CIB. Here’s how to do it today.
Why Oklahoma CIB Suspends Licenses
Number 1: Insurance lapse. This is the most common reason by a wide margin. Your General Liability policy expired, a payment lapsed, or your carrier non-renewed you and you didn’t catch it before CIB did. CIB has your insurance information on file from your application or last renewal — when they check it and the policy shows inactive, they act.
Number 2: Bond expiration. If your license type required a surety bond, a lapsed bond triggers suspension just like a lapsed GL policy. Bonds renew on their own schedule — it often doesn’t match your license renewal date, which is how the gap happens.
Number 3: Unpaid fees or unresolved violations. Outstanding fees from a previous renewal period, or an open complaint or violation on your license record, can result in suspension if not resolved. Check your GLSuite account for any open items.
Understanding which reason applies to you is step one. Log into cib.ok.gov and look at your license status and any notices in your GLSuite account. The reason for suspension will be documented there.

What You Can and Cannot Do With a Suspended License
Cannot:
- Perform contractor work for hire
- sign new contracts as the licensed contractor of record
- Have employees or crew working under your license on job sites
- Pull permits that require an active CIB license
- Legally represent yourself as a licensed Oklahoma contractor
Can:
- Submit reinstatement documents to CIB
- Get new insurance and request a COI
- Pay outstanding fees through GLSuite
- Communicate with customers about your situation
Working on an active job while suspended is not a gray area. It is illegal. If a customer, a GC, or an inspector reports you, you face additional penalties on top of the suspension. Don’t do it.
Immediate Steps to Reinstate
Work through these steps in order. Every day you wait is a day you can’t work.
Step 1: Get New GL Insurance Today
If your suspension is due to an insurance lapse, this is the first call you make. You need a bound GL policy and a Certificate of Insurance issued with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board named as certificate holder.
Same-day coverage is available for most Oklahoma contractors. Get your quote now, bind by midday, and have your COI in your inbox before end of business.
Your license is suspended right now. Get insured today and submit proof to CIB tomorrow.
We issue same-day COIs for Oklahoma contractors. Get your quote, bind your policy, and have your certificate ready to upload to GLSuite today.
Get Insured Now — Same DayStep 2: Submit Proof to CIB
Log into your GLSuite account at cib.ok.gov. Upload your new COI and any other required documents (bond certificate if applicable). CIB needs to see the documentation before they can begin the reinstatement review.
When uploading your COI, verify these before you hit submit:
- Coverage limits meet or exceed CIB minimums for your trade
- Oklahoma Construction Industries Board is named as certificate holder
- Policy effective date shows active coverage — not a future start date
If you need a reference on the specific limits CIB requires, see Oklahoma CIB license requirements for a trade-by-trade breakdown.
Step 3: Pay the Reinstatement Fee
CIB charges a reinstatement fee separate from regular renewal fees. Log into GLSuite to find the current fee amount for your license type. Pay it at the time you submit your reinstatement documents.
Do not assume CIB will waive or defer the fee. Pay it with your submission.
Step 4: Wait for CIB Confirmation
After you submit complete documentation and payment, CIB processes the reinstatement. The typical timeframe is 3 to 5 business days. You’ll receive confirmation through GLSuite and by email.
Do not start working until you receive written confirmation that your license is reinstated. “Submitted” is not the same as “approved.”
How Long Does Reinstatement Take?
3 to 5 business days after you submit a complete reinstatement package. That assumes everything is in order — correct documents, correct fee, no additional deficiencies.
If CIB sends a deficiency notice during the review (wrong coverage limits, missing certificate holder, etc.), fix the issue and resubmit. The clock resets from the new submission date.
The fastest total timeline — from getting insured to having an active license again — is typically 4 to 6 business days. Day 1: get insured and submit to CIB. Days 2-6: CIB review. Day 6 or 7: confirmation.
What to Tell Customers While Suspended
Be honest. Give them a specific, realistic timeline.
“My license is temporarily suspended due to an insurance documentation issue. I’ve already obtained new coverage and submitted reinstatement documents to CIB. Reinstatement typically takes 3 to 5 business days. I expect to be back in active status by [specific date].”
Do not tell customers you’re still licensed. Do not tell them the situation is more minor than it is. Do not agree to start or continue work before your reinstatement is confirmed.
If a customer asks to verify your license status, they can check it at cib.ok.gov. Once you’re reinstated, it will show active. Until then, it won’t.
How to Prevent Future Suspension
Automate your renewal reminders. Put your license expiration date and your GL policy expiration date in your calendar — separately — with alerts at 60 days and 30 days out.
Keep your COI current with CIB. When your GL policy renews, request an updated COI and upload it to GLSuite immediately. Don’t wait until renewal season.
Watch for carrier non-renewal notices. Carriers send non-renewal notices 30 to 60 days before a policy expires. Read your mail. If you get one, call your agent the same day.
Check your GLSuite contact info annually. CIB sends notices to the address on file. If that address is wrong, you don’t get the notice.
