Overview

What Is the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board?

CIB is Oklahoma's state licensing agency for contractors. They handle roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general contracting trades. If you want to legally operate as a contractor in Oklahoma, you go through CIB.

CIB sets the rules for who can legally do contractor work — and under what conditions. They define the insurance minimums, collect applications, and issue the licenses that GCs and property owners require before they'll let you on a job site.

Licensing is required for projects over certain dollar thresholds. Going above those thresholds without a license is a misdemeanor in Oklahoma. Most commercial customers won't even put you on a bid list without a valid CIB license on file.

Oklahoma CIB Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Oklahoma CIB requires proof of General Liability insurance before approving any contractor license application. The minimum coverage varies by trade — roofing requires $500,000 residential or $1,000,000 commercial; HVAC, plumbing, and electrical start at $50,000 per occurrence.

The application process typically takes 2-4 weeks after submission. However, you cannot submit your application until you have proof of insurance — which can be obtained same-day through our quote process.

Roofing contractors need a minimum of $500,000 per occurrence GL for residential work or $1,000,000 for commercial work. Note: roofing is a registration (not a license), so no surety bond is required. Roofing is regulated separately at verifyroofing.cib.ok.gov.

For projects under $10,000 and in most trades, CIB licensing is not required. However, many commercial customers and GCs require proof of insurance and a license regardless of project size. Unlicensed contracting above the threshold is a misdemeanor.

You can check your status at cib.ok.gov (GLSuite portal) or verifyroofing.cib.ok.gov for roofing. Our lookup tool above also checks your status and shows whether insurance is on file.
